LeDroit Park is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Washington DC, featured on our virtual tour this Sunday!

The area was formally developed in 1873 by Amzi Barber, an American industrialist known as "The Asphalt King", and named for his father-in-law, LeDroict Langdon. Despite working as a professor for newly established Howard University, Barber sought to build an exclusive, fenced, White suburb on the then outskirts of Washington. Laid out along the North side of "Boundary Road," now Florida Avenue, the neighborhood grid was made intentionally irregular, with street names that didn't match the alphabetic and numerical convention of the rest of the city.

Barber developed his suburb using racially restrictive housing covenants and discriminatory zoning laws to keep non-Whites out, but Black locals in the surrounding neighborhood of "Howardtown" fought back. The first Black resident of LeDroit Park was Octavius Williams, who worked as a barber on Capitol Hill. Within a few weeks of moving in (his home is pictured in the center), someone shot a bullet through the Williams family's front window, which lodged into a wall. The bullet was intentionally left there, as a testament to the struggle and strength of Black locals in their fight for housing equality.
